July 23, 2023 - The National Resistance Front of Afghanistan issued a press release condemning the Taliban's bans on Ashura mourning processions. This move by the Taliban is seen as an infringement on the religious freedom of the Shia Muslim community in Afghanistan.

Below is the translated content of the NRF’s press release, originally in Farsi:

The National Resistance Front supports the collective position of the people of Afghanistan, who demand the abolition of restrictions on the Ashura mourning processions. The NRF condemns any restrictions in this regard and sees these actions as an attempt to fuel religious differences and promote and institutionalize religious discrimination and inequality in the country.

In Afghanistan, the peaceful coexistence of different religious sects, including Sunni and Shia Muslims, has a long history. Our Shia brothers and sisters have always held the Ashura ceremony freely, whether in mosques, takayas, or public places, receiving sympathy and support from their Sunni compatriots.

Imam Hussain (R.A.), the grandson of the beloved Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.), is a role model for all Muslims in their fight against oppression and inequality. His rebellion against the tyrannical rulers of his time continues to inspire the brave people of Afghanistan who repeatedly rise against tyranny and oppression. We believe that one of the reasons for the Taliban's opposition to the Ashura ceremony is the anti-authoritarian nature of Hussain's uprising. By honoring this event, Muslims reaffirm their commitment to fight against oppressive and illegitimate religious governments.

At the National Resistance Front, we strive and fight for the liberation of Afghanistan from the grip of the Taliban terrorist group, whose practices are based on tyranny, discrimination, violence, and exclusion.

Our message to all religious, social, and political groups is that a free, independent, and peaceful Afghanistan is possible through unity and agreement among all political, religious, and ethnic forces. We must continue our efforts with all seriousness for its realization and continuation.

- End of Translation -

The National Resistance Front remains a vocal critic of the Taliban's oppressive tactics and an advocate for a free and independent Afghanistan. The NRF believes that unity among all political, religious, and ethnic forces is crucial for achieving a peaceful Afghanistan.

As we stand against the tides of oppression and division, we, too, draw from the spirit of resilience embodied in the Ashura. We are not merely observers, we are active participants in this narrative of resistance. We are activists dedicated to the cause of freedom, committed to shaping a vibrant and diverse cultural landscape for Afghanistan. Just as we honor the sacrifices of Imam Hussain and his followers, we honor the sacrifices of those who resist, who persist, and who dream of an Afghanistan free from the chains of tyranny.

We stand by all the people of Afghanistan, amplifying their voices and supporting their struggles. As we strive towards a brighter future for our homeland, we keep the spirit of Hussain’s Ashura alive, reminding us that, in the face of any and all adversity, we must never lose hope, never lose our resolve, and always keep the flame of resistance alight.

Our fight is not just on the battlefield, but also in the hearts and minds of the people, for it is there that the true essence of freedom and resistance lies. We honor the spirit of Ashura, the sacrifices made, and the eternal call for justice.

The echoes of Ashura resound in our collective mission to uphold the values of freedom, justice, and unity in our quest for a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan.
